I was at a wedding this weekend. I wasn’t photographing it. There were 3 photographers total. They also recorded video complete with a drone. I was there as a guest. Knowing that I’m a photographer. some of the bridal party told me of their experience with the photographer. They told me they were cold and calculated. There was no personality to the photographer or their staff. They went through their usual cookie-cutter poses and coverage of the wedding. Being in business for 25 years (I asked), I’m sure they will deliver professional photographs to their client. One thing I try to explain to potential wedding photography clients is that the photographer becomes part of the wedding. Their tone spreads to the wedding party, family, and eventually guests. Think of going to a movie with someone whose company you don’t enjoy. Then think how different it is to go with a good friend. I interact with you and bring out the best I can for the best photography. I help calm nerves, and creates candid reactions that are worthy of a photograph.,That’s the kind of support I offer when photographing weddings … and proposals!

I was contacted by someone who was coming from Cleveland for the weekend and wanted to propose to their partner. They had an idea where, but had never been there, nor were they certain of the best steps for proposing. We discussed their vision and some tips to make sure it remained a secret.

Surprise proposal sessions can take a lot of planning. I tell my clients all the time, don’t take phone calls in other rooms; Don’t tell upper partner’s friends; Don’t be impatient on the day of the proposal when you’re usually patient; And don’t be patient, when you’re usually rushing. You want to make it as special of a moment as possible, but you can over plan it too. My advice, find a professional photographer who will help support you throughout the process.

I add dummy headings on calendar invites like, “Drinks with David” for our proposal session, in case your significant other has access to your calendar. I coach on what to avoid wearing, where to get the best photos, and how to stay calm. Sometimes, I even help find the perfect location.

In this instance, I went to the park at the same time of day as the proposal. Before even discussing price or booking with me, I scheduled a time consistent with the proposal time to see what the lighting should look like on the actual date. I sent several videos showing our location options for the proposal explaining the pros and cons of each locations to find the best spot for the proposal. They wanted the fountain, but ultimately decided on the gazebo in case the weather was too sunny or rainy. Then, we reenacted it at the fountain for fun!

This is the kind of partnership I bring to my sessions. Referrals, and customers returning are more likely If I can help get the best photos possible.
